Artist Statement
“And Tango Makes Three,” an award-winning children’s book written in 2005
and based on a true story about two male penguins who raised a baby penguin,
topped the American Library Association’s annual list of works attracting
the most complaints from parents, library patrons and others. It was the
most challenged book of 2006 and 2007. The challenges and removal from circulation
in many librarys represents the deep-rooted homophobia in our country. Much
of my work over the last decade has dealt with religious zealotry and the
hatred it frequently spawns. The age-old anti-science of most religions is
also a component in this work. I choose Pastor Hagee as a symbol for the
religious right because of his closeness to Republican political power and
his partially fervent brand of homophobia.
